Vintage Sheet Ghost Decor

October 9 2024

If you love the vintage sheet ghost trend but can’t get your hands on vintage sheets, adding colors like pinks or yellows to floral sheets is a great way to get the look in a pinch. Alternatively, you might have vintage sheets but want the colors to match a certain color pallet- like in our case. We loved the yellow and white daffodil sheet but wanted a more halloween feel, so we dyed the sheet pink. The pink dye created a more orange tone to the daffodils, giving us the cutesy pink and orange vibe we were looking for.

Supplies
  • Rit Dye All-Purpose Liquid Dye
  • Rit ColorStay Fixative
  • 42” tomato cage shown (any size cage will do, we used a smaller 33” cage for the min-ghost)
  • Styrofoam ball
  • E6000 glue
  • Vintage full size sheet (you can make a twin work, but full size is easier to work with)
  • Tongs
  • ModPodge
  • Spray bottle
  • Hot Glue
  • Sunglasses or Felt

Instructions
  1. To build the ghost form: Turn the tomato cage upside down so the prongs that go into the soil are not sticking upright. Gather the prongs, add a good amount of E6000 to the tips, and stick the prongs into the center of the styrofoam head. Press the head down and let the glue dry.
  2. Dye the sheet according to the directions on the bottle, then soak the dyed sheet in a ColorStay Fixative bath. This step will hold in the color and keep it from quickly fading in the sun. Rinse, and set the sheet aside until most of the water has dripped off. You want the sheet to be a bit damp, but not soaking wet when you drape it over the ghost form. If the sheet is too wet/heavy you won’t get a good drape.
  3. These next steps are optional, however, we wanted our ghosts to hold a very specific shape, and didn’t want to worry about the sheet blowing away in the wind so we choose to harden them with ModPodge.
  4. If you have a covered area outdoors it’s best to continue these next steps outside. If not, place a plastic mat under your project to protect your house from glue drips! Find the middle of the sheet and place it on the styrofoam head. Work on draping the sheet around all sides until it hides the tomato cage and tucks nicely under the cage.
  5. Mix a ratio of 1:1 ModPodge in a spray bottle and begin to spray the ghost form from top to bottom. Try not to oversaturate the fabric with glue, you want to lightly spray the ghost and let it dry completely, then repeat these steps 3 to 4 times to get a really stiff finish. This process takes a few days, but is worth it in the end to create a permanent yard ornament.
  6. Once dry, add some flair! The Dollar Store is a great place to find funky sunglasses for cheap and is where we found ours for this project. Using a hot glue gun, glue the sunglasses on each side of the ghosts head.
