RSVP Gallery x Rit

We have collaborated with RSVP Gallery to bring you a collection of curated custom neon color formulas inspired by the iconic signage featured in their boutique. In celebration of the collaboration, we also created a series of video tutorials showcasing various shibori techniques and a dye kit available on their website.

Founded in 2009 by Don C and Virgil Abloh, RSVP Gallery has been a driving force at the intersection of streetwear, high fashion and pop culture. Offering merchandise that doubles as art, RSVP serves as a luxury boutique/art gallery, displaying and selling pop art and design from around the world.

Short for “Répondez s’il vous plaît” or “please respond”, the name is an invitation for guests to not only visit the space, but participate, get inspired, and respond.

We worked to together to create video tutorials showcasing various shibori dye techniques on various RSVP Gallery merchandise. All videos utilized the custom neon color formulas inspired by the iconic signage in their boutique.

Kanoko Technique

Kanoko shibori involves tying the fabric in sections to create resist patterns. Using different folds, binding techniques and tension can yield different patterns with endless possibilities.

Kumo Technique

Kumo shibori creates circular designs by pinching and binding fabric into sections. Continuing to bind the remainder of pinched fabric in a crisscross pattern will result in spiderweb-like patterns.

Arashi Technique

Arashi shibori is known as the pole-wrapping technique. Fabric is wrapped around the pole, tightly bound, and then scrunch towards one end. Named after the Japanese word for storm, Arashi shibori creates diagonal stripes that are reminiscent of storm-driven rain.

Itajime Technique

Itajime shibori is a shape-resist technique that uses positive and negative space to create endless design possibilities. Blocks are used to create pressure to prevent dye from penetrating the fabric. It’s most often used with a pleated accordion fold to create a grid pattern.

The video also features our Indigo shade, which is representative of a traditional shibori design. Click her to see the rest of the collection.
