Instructions
  1. Gather supplies.
  2. Prewash your cotton hoodie and leave it damp
  3. Carefully cut out the Nike Swoosh stencil on the back of the outer box.
  4. Place stencil on damp hoodie and trace with fabric pencil
  5. Using a double threaded needle, sew a basic running stitch around the traced Nike Swoosh.
  6. Pro tip: instead of a knot, tie a piece of twine at the end of your thread to make sure it doesn’t slip through.
  7. Pull thread to tightly gather the stitched area and tie together to secure.
  8. For variations, repeat to create circles on the elbows of the hoodie.
  9. Once hoodie is bound, set aside and prepare the dyebath.
  10. Fill container with 3 gallons of hot water, ideally 140F or hotter.
  11. If tap water is not hot enough, heat water on the stove and carefully add it to the dyebath.
  12. Add 1 cup of salt and 1 tsp of dish soap.
  13. Pour 1/2 cup of well-shaken Rit All-Purpose Indigo Dye and stir.
  14. Test color by dipping a paper towel into the dyebath.
  15. If color is too light, add more dye. If color is too dark, add more water.
  16. Submerge bound hoodie and patches into dyebath.
  17. For a high contrast pattern, keep the bound hoodie in the dyebath for 5-10 minutes to keep the wrapped part dye-free. For more color and less white areas, keep the bound fabric in the dyebath for 10-20 minutes.
  18. Remove from dyebath and rinse hoodie in warm water then cool water until rinse water runs clear.
  19. Remove the squares and rubberbands to reveal the ori nui pattern.
  20. Wash in cold water and air dry.
  21. Now that we’ve taken you through three Shibori techniques, you can experiment with mixing the patterns together to create your own one-of-one hoodie.
