Instructions
- Wet the carpet and place it outside on a tarp.
- Wearing rubber gloves, mix 1 bottle of Rit DyeMore for Synthetics in 3 gallons of water in a stainless steel pot and stir well.
- Heat DyeMore dyebath on the stovetop until the temperature reaches 200F or just under boiling.
- Wearing heat resistant rubber gloves or oven mitts, carefully pour the hot DyeMore Dyebath onto the damp carpet. Work slowly to avoid any splashes.
- Use a stiff bristle brush to work the dye into the carpet fibers and spread towards the edges.
- To achieve consistent results, make sure the dye stays hot. This is especially an issue if you are doing a large project. Dye can be reheated in the microwave for 1 to 2 minutes.
- Repeat to create additional colors and pour onto the carpet until you have the desired color.
- Use the stiff bristle brush to blend in the colors for a seamless watercolor look.
- Rinse well. Use a hose until the water that drains off the carpet is completely clear of dye.
- Hang to dry. Or, let rug set in the sunshine for a few hours or overnight.
- Optional: Spray with Scotchguard or similar product once dry.
- Use with a protective rug mat. Dye could stain floor if rug gets wet and dye was not rinsed out thoroughly.
- Important Note: It’s best to do this with an inexpensive area rug rather than an expensive heirloom one as spraying on dye can create uneven patches of color and color remover cannot be used effectively to change this. This technique should not be used for wall-to-wall carpeting.
